Erlangen is a university city of 110,000 people. The Bergkirchweih attracts up to a million visitors over twelve days. The mismatch is obvious: accommodation fills up fast, prices rise sharply around the Whitsun weekend, and leaving it to the last minute means either paying a premium or sleeping in Nuremberg.
This guide covers the best hotels in Erlangen for the Bergkirchweih 2026 (21 May – 1 June), sorted by location and type, with honest notes on what to expect. For everything else about the festival, see our complete Bergkirchweih guide.
The single most important tip: book now
For the Whitsun weekend (22–25 May 2026), book no later than February. For other weekends during the festival, six weeks ahead is a safe minimum. Weekdays are generally easier. The closer you get to the festival without a booking, the fewer options remain – and those that do remain are priced accordingly.
How to choose: location types
Right on the Burgberg (under 10 minutes' walk): Walk to the festival and walk home. No bus, no stress, After-Berg accessible on foot. Highest demand and highest prices.
Erlangen old town / city centre (10–20 minutes' walk): A very comfortable option. You are in the middle of the city, close to the After-Berg bars, and there is more hotel choice. Good balance of proximity and price.
Near the train station (20–30 minutes' walk or shuttle bus): Convenient for arriving by train. Good for day visitors, less ideal if you plan late nights.
Nuremberg as a base (S-Bahn, approx. 20 minutes): More hotel choice, lower prices, easy night trains at weekends. The sensible fallback if Erlangen is fully booked.

Hotel Brasserie – Art Nouveau, pedestrian zone, French bistro
Hotel Brasserie at Nürnberger Strasse 3 is Erlangen's most characterful mid-range option: an Art Nouveau building in the pedestrian zone, with floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden floors, designer bathrooms and leather sofas. Eight rooms only – so it books out fast. The ground floor Brasserie restaurant and bar is one of the better After-Berg starting points in the city, with Erlangen's largest outdoor terrace. 4 minutes on foot from Erlangen station and Erlangen Castle. Altstadthotel Grauer Wolf – classic old town hotel
The Grauer Wolf is a solid three-star in the northern old town – no surprises, reliable, well located for the After-Berg. Less than 15 minutes' walk from the festival grounds, and right on the route that the crowd takes heading back into the city after 11 pm. Good option for anyone who wants a straightforward, central base without paying boutique prices.

Zeitwohnhaus Suite Hotel – apartments, ideal for groups and longer stays
The Zeitwohnhaus Suite Hotel offers serviced apartments rather than standard hotel rooms – more space, private kitchen, washing machine. Rated 8.7 on Booking.com from over 1,200 reviews. Ideal for groups of four or more, or anyone staying several nights who wants the convenience of a home base. Located in the city centre, on the After-Berg route.

Novotel Erlangen – best for families
The Novotel Erlangen is the most family-friendly option in the city: children up to 16 sleep free in family rooms, generous breakfast area, plenty of space. Not the closest hotel to the Berg, but a reliable, comfortable base for families planning several days in Erlangen.

Alternative: Airbnb and apartments near the Burgberg
Airbnb listings directly on or near the Burgberg occasionally offer locations no hotel can match – steps from the festival entrance, or in the old town between the cellars and the city centre. For groups of four or more, a full apartment often works out cheaper than multiple hotel rooms. Be aware that Airbnb availability for the Whitsun weekend disappears early, often before hotels do.

Plan B: stay in Nuremberg, commute by S-Bahn
If Erlangen is fully booked or the prices are too high, Nuremberg is the obvious fallback. The S-Bahn from Nuremberg central station to Erlangen runs every 20 minutes during the day, with hourly night trains on weekends and the N10 night bus – both explicitly timed for After-Berg visitors heading home. Journey time is around 20 minutes.
Nuremberg has a far larger hotel supply in every category, and prices during the Bergkirchweih period are usually significantly lower than in Erlangen. For anyone attending just one or two evenings, this is often the smarter choice.
